IS THE BENEFIT THEY'RE REAL RANGE WORTH THE HYPE?

✎ Friday, 18 July 2014
If there is something Benefit knows how to do it's their marketing. This liner has been seen just about everywhere over the past month and it's causing a fair amount of stir in the beauty community. Some people love it whilst others are a little more skeptical. I completely adore the mascara so I was excited to see the make up remover and liner added to the 'They're Real' line.
We will start off with the mascara as it's not the new addition to the range. The Benefit They're Real Mascara boasts a plastic bristle brush with a small ball on the end of the wand to make getting every lash easier. I've always enjoyed this mascara and I've used two or three tubes up over the past couple of years. I'm particularly drawn to plastic bristle brushes so I like the addition of the small ball on the end as it allows for you to get the inner and outer lashes easily. The only negative I have to say about this is that it can be trying to remove so I've always reserved this for long days due to the long-lasting formula.
Now onto the most exciting release which is the new They're Real Push Up Liner*. This liner is the first of it's kind with a pen applicator but a gel formulation.  The finish is designed to be a long-lasting matte, waterproof finish that won't smudge, budge or dry out. The slanted applicator is designed to help you have the ultimate control and get right in close to lash line.

On first trying this liner I had it in the 'overhyped' basket. I thought it was incredibly hard to use and the pen just a pain. I've never been very good at gel eyeliner so I think I had it in my mind that it'd make me a pro straight away - but it doesn't and won't. I was determined to continue using it in bid to find a way to make it work and over time I've grown to like it. The trick is to not click the pen too much otherwise it does dispense too much gel onto the end of the brush which can cause a mess. It also takes some time to build up into a thick line so patience is key. I do love the slanted applicator now and I agree with the claims that it allows for you to get right into the lash line. The only negative I have to say about it is it doesn't create a crisp line. As you can see above as soon as you start building it up it feathers at the edges so if you're after a crisp cat-eye this won't achieve that but for an everyday subtle flick it's great. Oh and I thought I'd mention that the packaging of the liner is really on point, instead of your typical click-top lid it's a screw so it's never going to come off in your make up bag - win!
Finally onto the They're Real Remover* which is packaged in this gorgeous black squeezey tube. I'm really happy that Benefit decided to include a make up remover in this line because as I said the mascara itself is really hard to remove. This is a cream formulation that the instructions say to squeeze onto a cotton pad then gentle wipe eyes. I thought I would need alot of the product but you really only need a pea size amount for each eye. I find that you do need to wipe and then rinse one eye then move onto the other, or do them both quickly, otherwise the smudged mascara and liner set again and you need more of the make up remover. I'm super impressed with this and I really didn't think the cream formulation would be for me.

What do you think of the new editions to the Benefit line?

  1. I like the mascara, but to be honest I'm kinda tired of seeing them popping up on every blog. Just for that reason I'm not going to buy for now.

  2. I absolutely LOVE Benefit but the They're Real mascara doesn't cut it for me.. I'm yet to try their eyeliner but I think it's so pricey comapred to other drugstore liners that I just can't justify it! The packaging is so sleek though haha. xx

  3. Great, thorough review - the first that's made me want to try the liner to be honest, as most I have read have seemed too hyped-up to be true!

  5. I've been resisting the hype about this liner and I think I will continue to do so... I'm really curious about it, but have a few liners that are doing the job perfectly well for me at the moment, and from the sounds of it this one would just frustrate me with trying to get it look right (I feel like I've only recently just mastered liquid liner haha). I do love the idea of the screw top lid though, ingenious xx

  6. Thanks for the review! The liner especially has been so hyped up recently. It does sound like a good eyeliner, and I do love a subtle wing that's not too sharp, so it's perfect! A screw top lid? Yes!!

  7. I love the mascara. I will continue to repurchase but I too am kinda over hearing about the push up liner. The marketing strategy has had the opposite effect on me- I have no desire to try this product. As for the makeup remover I'll stick with Bioderma for me nothing beats that! Thanks for the review.

  8. Great review, Sarah! Thanks! I played with this (liner) at the store the other day and was really on the fence. Couldn't decide.

  9. The They're Real range is probably my favourite for eyes especially. I once had a sample size from a magazine and surprisingly enough, it's still stashed somewhere in my room, ready for usage. Great coverage and photos x

  10. I already had the mascara in my makeup collection but I had just purchased the Push Up Liner and remover about two weeks ago and I really like it!

My complaints are that with the push up liner it does clump up a bit while using and it's a bit difficult to get used to but for the first ever gel pen liner it's a good start! They could improve though so I am looking forward to They're Real Push Up Liner 2.0! ;)

  11. I find the eyeliner a bit of a pain due to the despensing action - you're paying a heck of a lot for it, so I don't want to waste any and therefore only click one click at a time, but it seems to take such a long time to come up the tube, I end up clicking a few more and then after I've finished my eyes, loads more gel oozes out wasting it (it dries even with the cap on I find to a certain degree so when you come back next time, you have to clean it off).

The remover is a bit of a con imho - any cream based cleanser does a top job of removing it - I use Liz Earle (a UK brand) or Happy Skincare cream cleansers, so have used those and they do an amazing job of removing it (better than the benefit one really imho), although the packaging is lovely :)

A very nice idea, and if they can remedy the speed of dispensing (clicking and then waiting to do another bit of make up is*so* not going to happen with my brain lol), I'm more of a fan of the eyeliner, but still love my old fashioned gel liner with brush, I find it a bit more versatile really.

  12. The mascara is by far one of the best waterproof ones on the market for me. I love it to death and will repurchase forever, it's well worth the money. I prefer a Mary Kay remover, it just swipes it right off, so I'll be sticking with that. I've had 'clicking' concealers in the past and didn't like them so I probably won't be getting the liner any time soon.

  13. I have a sample tube of They're Real mascara waiting to be used, I'm very excited to! As for the liner, I think I will give it a miss. The reviews are too mixed for me a think, and the negative points seem really valid. I think I'd prefer traditional brush and pot. Glad you got the hang of it though!

  14. I was a bit skeptical also about these products, as I did think they would be all hype. The packaging, however, is on point and very appealing- I love the colours. With this review in mind I may see if I can venture out to test these products, as they can be hard to get hold of here in New Zealand.

  15. I've been underwhelmed by the lot of it. Totally agree with the feathery finish!
