An overlooked concept about blogging is how stressful it can be because of the large workload involved. It's not just as simple as pulling an image off the internet and writing a few lines - there is a whole process. I know I certainly underestimated the insane amount of work involved! It's very easy to allow for blogging to consume your life to the point where there is an unbearable pressure on you. I've been there so many times before and even now I can feel extremely pressured - especially when I have other things happening in my life. I thought I'd share some really easy tips and tricks that will help if you're feeling stressed or under pressure.
WRITE LISTS
I always find when I overthink or try to remember everything I have to do I get overwhelmed. Writing a list allows you to visualise exactly what you need to do to achieve your goals! It doesn't matter if you don't get everything done right away but just the fact that it's all written down will instantly make you feel better and satisfied as you tick things off your list.
BREAK IT DOWN
Similarly to list making - breaking everything down makes your goals more attainable. With More Than Adored I always write the title of my posts then the letters 'P' 'E' 'W' 'S' underneath. Once I've done 'photos', 'edit', 'write' 'schedule' I tick them off. Since I've moved to daily blogging I find this extremely helpful so that I know where I'm up too. Breaking down a larger task definitely helps when you feel as though you have so much to do and don't know where to start.
FAILED CONTENT IS OK
Another thing I thought I'd touch on is what I called 'failed content'. It's not that it's a bad post but more that it wasn't as well received as you would have hoped. I always find this a little hard to deal with and it can really stress me out BUT remember that everyone has those posts that just don't do as well. I always find I reshuffle my schedule and try to post something that's highly requested or that I know really works after a bad day because it lifts me up again. Just keep in mind that every single blogger will experience it so you're not alone!
DRAFTS
Having a few posts saved in your drafts can be a lifesaver - this is something I need to get better at. Last week I had a horrible week and didn't feel like doing anything blog related which for me is pretty strange. Luckily I had finished the weeks content and I was able to have three days of hormonal-chocolate-eating-movie-days without worrying tooooo much but it is rare for me to be as ahead as I was. Have some posts like tags, face of the days, wish lists that won't go 'out-of-date' so when you need to you can schedule them and take some time away from your blog.
GUEST POSTS
I have never done this but I know of other bloggers that have decided to have a week off and ask for other blogging friends to take over for the week or have different bloggers posting everyday. I really love this idea because it gives some of your favourite bloggers extra exposure and you get to have time off. Obviously this does take some planning so it's not so realistic for those emergency times but it's a great idea if you have a holiday coming up!
TAKE TIME OFF
It's SO important to give yourself time off blogging. A lot of people work full time and then blog after work but you still need 'me' time just like anyone else. Have a day, a week or even a month off not doing anything blog related. It's really refreshing and if you fee overwhelmed it does cure that. I also find after time off I come back full of ideas for content so it can really help if you're feeling a little uninspired.
What are your top tips for running a stress-free blog?

I love your breaking down idea.
ReplyDeleteWhat I do is I have a semi-flexible schedule, meanind on Mondays I post about manicure, on Thursayd and Friday it's open and on Saturday I have a lifestyle post, and on Sunday I post my favourite links of the week. it helps to break down the amount of post and have some kind of directions.
I'm also loving the idea of guest posts, I'm looking for guest bloggers et the mo, it's going to be my first time hosting those!

Loved this post, thanks for the tips.
ReplyDeleteGreat post Sarah. Definitely agree with the taking time off thing. I find sometimes I can exhaust all my ideas and motivation to write so stepping back always allows me to breathe and then I am full of writing juice again.

Great tips Sarah :) I always get down on myself when a post doesn't do well, but it's important to keep on truckin'! I do a similar step system as you with PEWS, it makes it so much easier to get a post done and dusted when it is a step-by-step process :)

I love your posts about blogging! Not many bloggers actually give people a look at how they work behind the scenes, and tips and tricks to blogging. Loved your idea of breaking it down. I thought I remembered seeing those letters on one of your instagram photos of your diary and I wondered what they stood for. Great idea! It's really nice to hear these things from an experienced blogger. I really appreciate your authenticity :)

Great tips, especially the part where you break it down. I love that bit about the four checkboxes to check off. I'm going to implement that in my planning too. Thanks! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat tips! I often have trouble organising my posts/making time to even finish the many drafts I have! I will definitely bookmark this, thanks!
ReplyDeleteGreat tips, thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteI normally use wednesday and sunday for a photo project, so that if I don't have any good idea on content, I can just post a picture without worrying too much.
There are some days when I feel really inspired and I take the occasion to write the more drafts that I can. Normally I schedule them for the week, but I think I'm gonna follow your tip and save some of them for those times when I want to publish something but I don't have any time or ideas..
