Recently I had a bit of a life ‘moment’ where nothing was going right. I was broke, a close family member had ended up in hospital and I couldn’t keep up with my casual job as well as this little place on the web. Pretty much shit got real very quickly and it was very overwhelming for me.
Now this was just last month and I don’t think (or I hope) that you didn’t notice because I felt like I handled it pretty well as I continued to post twice daily. Although I felt like I held it together on the surface fairly well, upon reflecting on the past few weeks there are a few things I wish I had done differently so I thought I’d share with you what helped me/what I wish I’d done. So if your life momentarily falls apart (which I really hope it doesn’t) you can keep it together.
Scheduling is your best friend
All my posts are scheduled here on More Than Adored so for the week I was out things continued as normal… Well kind of! I shuffled around my content so things I had photographed and/or were easier to write came forward vs. how to’s or DIYs that might take longer. Schedule your posts and any corresponding social media as much as you can. I use Hootsuite for my scheduling my tweets and sometimes Facebook.
Have posts/photos ‘just in case’
I’m a bit rubbish at this because I only like to be a week ahead of myself at any given time. In saying that now I’m trying to have at least a weeks worth of content that won’t ever expire so if I’m in a life-crisis I can bring those forward and my blog will continue as normal.
Go back to basics
Continuing on from that these posts don’t have to be fancy things! Go back to the basics and do some ‘top 5 of X’ or ’10 things I learnt X’ etc. These are easier to write and they’re pretty popular with your audience too.
Get help in!
As you’ll probably know by now I have four writers who contribute 1-2 posts per month and corresponding with them during my completely crappy period was amazing because every single one of them was super willing to pick up the slack if need be. Now I know not every one has or wants to have regular contributors on their site and I’m not saying it has to be a permanent thing but maybe consider inviting some of your favourite bloggers or blogging besties in too contribute whilst you’re dealing with life.
Take a break
In the end if sh*t is real just take a step back. Although you may see blogging as an important aspect of your life, and one that you possible make a living off, it’s important to recognise when you need to step away. I didn’t need to do this however I have taken time off before because I needed space. Switching off does make life easier so make sure you know when it’s time to take a breather.
What are your top tips for when holding your blog together when shit gets real?
