THE MIRACLE OF BALAYAGE

The balayage trend is sticking around and we couldn’t be happier! You’ve seen all the celebs rocking the low maintenance style but find out how our beauty Krystelle transformed her hair and why she loves it so much!

Hi Everyone!

My name’s Krystelle, and I’m so excited to be a regular contributor to More Than Adored! Sarah has made me a total beauty addict, and this is going to be such a great outlet for me! Hopefully I’ll be able to give you all some helpful advice along the way…

My first post came around a really good time; the first time I’ve had my hair coloured in about 18 months! I realize this sounds like forever, and that I should be taking more care of my hair, but I haven’t had to! I’m about to talk to you about the miracle of balayage! And no, it has not out-grown its trend! It’s a totally gorgeous, low-maintenance technique of getting the bottom two thirds of your lengths lightened to create depth, highlight your hairs’ natural texture and to perfectly frame your face. For some background, my hair is super thick, is naturally poker-straight, and has oily roots and dry ends. Balayage has really helped create some dimension for my flat and heavy hair.

These are my before and after photos, my hair was just brushed and was a little fluffy (forgive the horrid photos, still getting used to this selfie thing…):You can see that my original balayage has reached the final third of its length. It’s well and truly time for a re-colour. It has kept its shine, which is great considering the drying nature of highlighting. (I’ll take you through some incredible products that have helped shortly). Afterwards, my complexion has been brightened up, and it frames my face much better. It also looks more naturally blended than before, rather than really, really old regrowth.

The whole process took 3 hours, and was super boring as my phone went flat and I had no glasses to read mag. Daniel teased my hair at the roots to ensure that the bleach was blended properly, which is super clever! HOWEVER washing and brushing it all out was painful and took forever. The results speak for themselves though. This is day one without it’s first wash, It’s a tiny bit lighter than what I’m used to, but I’m hoping after a shampoo or two it will wash out a little, get a little more brassy-toned, and look more natural.

After going lighter it’s so important to be moisturising the ends of your hair on a daily basis. The bleach is like putting lemon juice directly to your hair, and without proper care, it can easily go straw-like. I use a combination of hair masks and oil to nourish my ends.Cristalli Moroccan Argan and Macadamia Oil is the best-smelling and most luxurious hair oil I’ve ever used. My only gripe is the packaging! For the price, you want something a bit prettier, but the product is absolutely lovely. I got this for free with my deep-waver, and I haven’t looked back! It’s my holy grail hair oil.

Once a week I treat my hair with the Damage Remedy Intensive Restructuring Treatment by Aveda. It’s a weird one. It doesn’t feel moisturising to the touch, but you can’t argue with the results. Especially when I was swimming daily (… I don’t do that anymore because of my lazy lifestyle. Can you now see why low-maintenance hair colouring is for me?), the chlorine would damage my hair so badly and I had the most horrid split ends. This stuff gave my ends a new life by restoring moisture, I absolutely adore it. It’s the perfect treatment for summer.

What do you think? Do you think the Balayage trend is dead? Or is it the perfect low-maintenance solution for beautiful and light beachy hair?

  • Great post! I had balayage for over 2 years and I really loved mine, when mine outgrew to about a third as yours did in the first pic, I decided to dye mine back to a dark brown which is my natural colour but I may go light again in the future! I just love the look but needed a change!

I’ve gone through so many phases, but I think this one will stick until it grows out :-)

  • It looks gorgeous! I’ve actually never coloured my hair, but I’ve been thinking about Balayage! It looks so gorgeous, and much more natural than ombre.

It totally does! I would definitely go to an experienced hairdresser though, my first experience wasn’t fantastic as they weren’t blended as well as this. It’s all about the teasing :P
