HOW TO STRENGTHEN YOUR NAILS

Nail care can be tricky. When your nails aren’t looking the best all you want to do is cover them up with a manicure? Am I right?! Fear not, here are some really effective ways to strengthen your nails so you never have to worry about forgetting to paint your nails again.

GIVE YOUR NAILS A BREAK
Ever heard of the saying ‘no pain no gain’ that applies here… Kind of. You need to give your nails a break from everything. No simple base coat, no polish and definitely no shellac or salon treatments of any kind. You will resent your nails for the first week but trust me it’ll be worth it. I also like to completely start again by trimming my nails right down but that’s completely up to you. During this time what I like to do is apply the Revitanail Keratin Strengthening Serum before bed because it helps to transform dry, flaky nails and gives them some serious strength. It’s a cream product you massage in then leave it on overnight, it sinks in so you won’t notice it at all. Another fantastic alternative is good old Coconut Oil. You will notice that on your hands but it does a great job too. Two weeks + some sort of cream treatment once per day will help!

TWO WEEKS ON, ONE WEEK OFF
This is the general rule of thumb I go by with manicures. I have nail polish on my nails for two weeks and then I give my nail a break and apply the Revitanail Serum daily. Sometimes my nails don’t need that break but I do it anyway to ensure they stay healthy. Try adding dual action base coat to your manicure routine as well, it’ll help! My pick is Orly’s Nail Strengthening & Growth Treatment Basecoat (different name now it’s called Nailtrition).

FOODS AND VITAMINS DO HELP
There are so many different options when it comes to vitamins and I really suggest talking to a pharmacist or doctor about what ones will suit you best. For me, I take the Nature’s Own Mega Potency Women’s Multivitamin which I find helps alot in terms of nail strength. The other vitamin I find really helped my nails is the Swisse High Strength Deep Sea Krill Oil - I’m not sure if that’s something that is meant to promote nail strength or not but personally I noticed a huge difference. Otherwise incorporating foods rich in omega 3’s and proteins will contribute to stronger nails over time.

BREAK THE HABITS
A few years ago if I was bored you could find me picking away my nail varnish but now I look back and cringe! It’s one of the worst things you can do for your nail because you’re essentially taking a layer of your actual nail away with the polish. It’s time to kick that habit along with biting, peeling or sawing your nails with a file. You may not think it’s doing that much damage but you’d be surprised once you stop. Also be aware of how many times you wash your hands because that can really soften the nails and make them peel. Easily fixed with a bit of hand cream!

  • I used to pick at my polish too. And especially the skin around the nail *cringe* One of the products that have really saved them though, is the Burt’s Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream. Looove that stuff! The “two week on, one week off” rule is a good idea!

    • I still pick the skin around my nails when I’m stressed lol. I love the Burts Bees cuticle cream too - need to remember to carry it around with me!

  • Loz

I still pick my polish off *smacks hand* and rarely give my nails more than a couple of day of polish-free time. The Burts Bees Lemon Cuticle Cream is fantastic, nothing makes your nails look worse than manky-looking cuticles :)

    • My cuticles are something I just can’t get right. I am so so so slack with the cuticle cream - love the Burts Bees one I just always forget!

Sit it near your computer, or where you usually do your blogging, that’s where mine is and I find I use it way more often than if it’s in my bathroom or near my bed :)

I always pick my nail polish of! I must stop haha

I’ve just started using Burts Bees Lemon Cuticle Butter before my mani’s, but I must admit I rarely am without polish. I change the colour every week. I really should give my nails a break once in a while!

I need to give my nails a break but I prefer pretty nails!

  • I definitely need to start using a serum or something on my nails. They go so dry and flaky and then they just break and it’s horrible, especially since I work in the beauty industry and I can’t rock up to work with chipped nails all the time!

  • Loz

Hmm? Thought I’d already commented on this :) I still pick my nails and wear polish constantly!!! Burts Bees is the best cuticle cream though!

    • You probably did! I updated my Disqus and for some reason all my previous comments aren’t showing.. Weird. x

  • Haha I was just having my nails done at the salon today and asked the nail technician why the peely bits at the top of my natural nail? She said they were just dry and I needed to use hand cream. But yes…I admit I love manicures for hiding my nail-flaws. :p A serum sounds like a great solution!

I always think of hand cream as a skincare product for my hands, I use strengthening basecoat when I wear nail polish. I’ve never thought of treating my peeling nails with simple old hand cream. I bought some Burt’s Bees cuticle cream & I keep forgetting to use it. Thanks for the tips. :)

LOVE that purple color and I definitely need to try out the nail strengthener!
