You guys know I’m a huge believer in spending on items you know you are going to wear over and over. Every season I invest in 2-3 pieces I know that I’m going to wear for the long term. What about the trendy pieces? SAVE!

The thing is that fast fashion is fast. Chain stores can have things through production within 6 weeks of conceptualisation so chances are if a trend arises you’ll see it in the likes of Cotton On, Factorie, Sportsgirl and Topshop pretty darn quick. All those stores will have weekly new arrivals and new offers at least bi-weekly… You get the idea! Things move pretty darn quickly which works to our benefit when it comes to buying affordable trend lead pieces.

There is a real knack to finding the piece for you though like THE piece and it’s dangerous because I’ve become really good at it. I’ll use a leopard coat for an example. Every year I allow myself to buy one new jacket and this year I wanted it to be a leopard number. I first looked in the ASOS sale, because a tonne of their brands are UK based so the seasons are opposite, and I found one I liked. It was marked down by 30% so I saved it for later and continued on my hunt by checking the Australian based chain stores regularly. I checked online for 2-3 weeks until I found the Bardot version and it is perfect… However sold out in my size (in the preorders how RIDIC)… Luckily I stalked the shit out of it and ended up scoring it wooohooo! Key is to shop around until you find something you love!

I digress. When hunting for an item take into consideration past things you’ve bought from the brands. For instance I probably won’t buy denim from Cotton On but I love Rubi Shoes for affordable trend based shoes I’m not sure on. It is alot of trial and error but so worth it as you end up finding some really ace pieces for a great price! That way if you don’t end up loving it or wearing it next season it doesn’t really matter. Everything I’m wearing in the above photos is super affordable and I’m stoked with the quality on all accounts!

I’m not much of a trend wearer, but my biggest tip would be hunt around for a bargain and/or stalk the sales (which I do regardless). I’ve had my eye on a bomber jacket for about a year now & have kinda got my eye on a quilted bomber jacket from Witchery atm; however, its current price point is RIDICULOUS IMO ($200!), so I’m either going to wait for a sale or try & find a dupe that’s more affordable…or forget about it altogether.

Finding a trend item that’s in a colour or print you always wear helps as well, especially if it’s a classic shade like black, white or neutrals. I also wouldn’t buy into a trend just for the sake of it – knowing your own sense of style & what suits your body will help you avoid making a fashion decision you’ll regret later.
