TIPS FOR MAKING HEALTHY SMOOTHIES AT HOME

The latest craze or ‘trend’ in the health world is fresh juices and smoothies. Buying them everyday at your local juice bar can be expensive so we’ve given here’s a few tips so you can make some equally as yummy and healthy drinks right from the comfort our your own home.

DO - pepare in bulk
What my boyfriend and I do is make a weeks worth up in sandwich bags and freeze them for the week ahead. It keeps everything fresh and it adds a yummy texture to your smoothie. If you’re not keen on the texture it gives your drink try doing a few days in advance and just popping them in the fridge. It makes having a smoothie alot easier to slot into your everyday routine.

DON’T - start off crazy
If you’re not a fan of a particular vegetable, like kale, don’t try to drink it in your smoothie with only one other thing. It seems pretty obvious but it’s not an all or nothing situation. You won’t enjoy it so you’ll give up before you have even started. The way I started was added apples and orange into the more green vegetables. I mean when I say after a while I didn’t even notice and the ratios of smoothies are more green now!

DO - add boosters
Although you’re literally drinking salad in a cup it’s a fantastic way to add some extra boosters to your systems. Bioglan do some really yummy Breakfast Boosters that are full of extra antioxidants, proteins, omega-3 and fibre. I like the Cacao and Coconut one in my banana smoothies and the Goji & Strawberry one in with just my regular green smoothies (they’re great in your porridge as well!). I also add in the Rosehip Vital Powder which is great if you have joint problems or lower back pain. Find something extra that you can sneak in for a boost of goodness!

DON’T - invest in the beginning
For a long time I was in a huff because we just couldn’t - and still can’t - afford a Vitamix but I’m so glad we didn’t buy it to begin with because I personally have had a slow start to loving smoothies. We started off with the cheapest juicer and blender from Kmart and now we use the George Foreman Mix and Go which has been fantastic for us. We’re only now looking to upgrade because we both use it daily, sometimes twice, but I’m glad we didn’t splash the cash right at the start. You don’t know if you’re going to love it or not so don’t feel like you need all the best toys in the beginning.

DO - try different things
I was anti-kale right from the start. Now? I love Kale in my smoothies! It’s important to keep on trying new combinations and new ingredients too. Ginger is another one you wouldn’t have caught me drink ever but now as soon as I feel like I’m getting sick I’m downing it! Keep experimenting with different combinations and you’ll be sure to find some gems.

My favourite combinations?
My everyday juice is apple, celery, cucumber, spinach, kale, pineapple, ice, water with the rose-hip vita and Goji & Berry Boosterl (sometimes pineapple juice if I’m feeling naughty). For a treat I do banana, strawberry, pineapple, coconut milk with cacao + coconut booster.

What are your top tips for making smoothies at home? Oh and what are your favourite combinations?

Great advice! Smoothies have to be one of the most nutritious and delicious foods around! I tend to stick mainly to fruit in mine but I would like to experiment and try some vegetables too :)

    • Just try adding some extra vegetables into your normal fruit smoothies! Spinach you’ll barely notice :) x

    Great tips!

  • Mm I’ve recently been loving smoothies too! Except mine are probably the unhealthiest smoothies ever… just fruit + ice cream + milk haha!

    • Hmmm ice cream! I’m a bit dairy intolerant so I can’t have too much of all the yummy stuff :(

      • Oh same here! But I do it anyway and regret it later when the stomachache comes :P

Some great tips! I can never think of anything beyond the usual banana and strawberry to put in mine. Thanks for the suggestions!

    • Chuck in some spinach! You won’t even notice it :) x

I’ve started doing the sandwhich bags and it makes it so easy!

    • How great is it?! It’s been a lifesaver for me x

I freeze my strawberries and bananas in bags and the last for the next week and a bit. I usually have a breakfast smoothie with strawberry, banana, blueberries, flaxseed, protein powder, oats and yoghurt (and water). Yum! I might have a look at the breakfast booster next time I’m in Priceline!

    • YUM! That sounds amazing. I think I need to start adding some oats and yogurt into the mix cuz that sounds amazing!!! Yep the boosters are amazing, I’ve already been through a packet of both :P

  • I really like putting banana and spinach together & then just adding whatever to it. maybe a bit of protein powder or some berries, sometimes yoghurt or flax. If I want it to be cold I’ll pop in some ice. The possibilities are endless. Ive made a few doozies but you figure it out eventually!

    • Haha oh so have I! I’ve made some that are so bad that my boyfriend won’t even drink it… That’s when you know it’s REALLY bad when a non-fussy male who eats anything won’t drink it hehe x

I definitely agree with your point about more fruits than veggies at first! I was lucky enough that I did that ever since the beginning. My favourite that I’ve recently blended up is pretty simple: a punnet of strawberries, one ripe banana, lots of flaxseed and ice. Delicious.

    • I need to start adding flaxseed again! It’s something I’ve completely forgotten about! x

Oh I didn’t know you could add boosters to your smoothies! Home-made Boost juice sounds pretty neat!

I’m quite new at this whole smoothie making business and am addicted to the simple banana smoothie…with just banana and milk, hehe I’ll add in berries occasionally so thanks for sharing your fave combos, I’ll have to ease into the green thing, I tried kale
    once and it was revolting.

My sister likes making smoothies and she finds adding pineapples into them makes everything magically taste much better :)

    • Yes boosters are amazing! Kale is something you’ll learn to love but start simple and build your way up. Add some spinach into your usual simple ones. You won’t even notice :) x

  • I’ve recently jumped on this bandwagon, and have been doing breakfast smoothies on the days i go to work, a banana, a couple of tablespoons of oats, chia, natural yoghurt, skim milk and honey to taste, easiest breakfast, and it fill me up.
I also bought some maca powder, but am not liking the aftertaste, so will try it in smaller doses and try to build it up. Also just bought some flaxseed mix to add more protein.
Am going to try and be good and do this on days i am home as well, rather than toast with peanut butter and honey ;-)

    • Yum! I love the sound of your breakfast one. I haven’t tried maca powder.. It’s meant to taste a bit like malt isn’t it? Definitely interested to hear how you end up going with that!

Oh and don’t worry my guilty pleasure is porridge with lots of brown sugar hehe :P

There is some great advice on this article! My ex used to go full-on with every new fad, he would buy the best and most expensive and two weeks later he’d be bored and onto the next thing. I love the tip about freezing, I’ve been too nervous thinking they’d be all weird and gross when they thawed. The boosters are a great idea too and I never thought I adding them to porridge!
