Looking back on old photos today I had a wave of nostalgia for University. Say What!? Those caffeinated nights in the library while you run over the theory of Cognitive Dissonance is one thing I will never pretend to miss, but the social comradery and the cushiony routine of classes made everything seem okay, seem balanced… and then you graduate and it feels like the soft cushiony rug is whipped out from under you. Surprisingly, I survived and this is what I’ve learnt…
1. You’ll have to start at the bottom: Makes sense. If you find another way around that, please do let me know. Wink.
2. Say Yes: Fortunately being a graduate means a lot of experienced professionals will want to help you grow and get experience. Unfortunately, these opportunities for growth will not always happen when you necessarily feel ready. Regardless, be confident in yourself and say yes. It’ll take you further than the alternative.
3. Everyone has a story: Networking has never been so important, besides I’m sure you’ve heard the saying ‘its not what you know, its who you know’ right?. Instead of using people to get further in your career, take the opportunity to learn from them. Everyone you meet has a story, and whether it be personal or professional they have something to teach you. So listen.
4. Follow your gut: Post graduation I worked, then travelled Europe and landed back home in a job that I thought was ‘the one’. Life however had another plan for me.I ended up in hospital and by the time I returned back to work I realised that it wasn’t the right job for me. Life is short and I wanted to be in a positive and supportive environment, so I quit. I quit with no back up plan and I didn’t look back. I’m not encouraging this as I was incredibly lucky to find my current job very soon after, but follow your gut and take risks. If you feel like you deserve more, go find it. As incredibly cliched as it sounds, you only have one life and boy does it go quickly.
5. Smile: You made it! After all those late nights, cups of coffee and awful lecturers, you made it. If that doesn’t deserve a smile, I don’t know what does!
What have you learnt since graduating?
