4 WAYS TO BUY BETTER

Have you ever bought something and just totally regretted it a few weeks later? If you’re saying no, stop! You’re lying because we all have. Here a few tips for avoiding that next time you hit the shops.

WRITE A LIST
You all saw this coming because I think that making a list can solve most of our problems. Before you head out to the shops write a list of the things you’re looking for so that way you don’t get sidetracked by the new section in store. I have a pretty hefty list saved in my notes so if I do spontaneously decide to have a mosey at the stores I can have a flick through and keep an eye out for those bits.

CONSUMER TRAPS
These are the things that are put into stores to make to spend money. It comes in many, many different forms but if you’re wary of them you won’t get sucked in. Every single retail store is laid out in a certain way. Ever noticed the ‘NEW’ sign with the latest hot trends as soon as you walk in? Or in a electrical store that they have all the Apple bits right up front available to play with? Or even that sale racks are always right down the back and squeezed in so it’s impossible to sort through? Oh and my favourite - they advertise 50% OFF STOREWIDE but in tiny writing to says ‘excludes everything but one tiny rack that has make up all over it’… Something like that… I digress. It’s all there to make you spend money so be aware of that and take your time walking around stores rather then grabbing the first thing you see.

QUESTION YOURSELF
I’m guilty of being the worse person at doing this. I recently bought another kimono that I really didn’t need (no Sarah, YOLO is not a valid justification for that purchase neither is the maybe I’ll say I’m collecting them now.. Just no). If you’re holding onto the most beautiful piece you think you’ve ever seen ask yourself these questions: Do you need it? Can you find something similar for a better price? Is it worth the price on the tag? Do you need other things more?

IF YOU’RE NOT SURE…
If it’s tight and it’s the last one - don’t buy it because you’re probably not going to lose the weight to justify the purchase (says the girl with too many size things) and if it just doesn’t look ‘right’ then put it back. Bring a friend back another day for a second opinion! Or something I do is check out the stores return policy, take the item home and try it on in my own space. You’ll have your other clothing for styling and you won’t be under those horrid fluorescent lights every store has.

  • I’m definitely very much guilty of impulse buys. I’ll go into a store with the intention of buying a specific article of clothing and leave with a significantly lighter wallet than what I planned. As for my little tip, whenever I have trouble deciding whether or not I want something, I’ll leave the store (after hiding the item…yes I’m one of those people) and shop around for a bit, and if the item is still on my mind after a while then I’ll go back and buy it. xx

    • HAHA! I work in retail so I always laugh when I see people hiding items or find something in a weird spot.. I’ve done it a few times myself though ;P

  • great advice !! I think every girl has the same problems when it comes to shopping and in actuality, we need to consider a few questions before we buy something for ourselves, just like you said :) That way, it will ensure our decision and eliminate things that we dont really need <3

    • Limited edition make up? Gets me every single time!!!

I love this post. Sounds like me with everything!
List - I did that before I went to Melbourne last weekend and only bought a fraction of it =)
Consumer traps - gets me all the time particularly the ‘spend $$$ and receive this’. I did that on the weekend too (see current post haha). Whenever I shop with my husband, I go to him “look at the savings” and he’ll go “you would have saved more if you didn’t buy it” oh words of wisdom
Question - omg I had this dilemma in Myer on the weekend, I found the perfect race day dress but I just couldn’t fork out the cash for it. Haha oh the problems =P Luckily, Target has some affordable yet stunning dresses too!
Not sure - I was adamant to get my feet in the perfect wedding shoes which were the last pair and a size too small. I got there in the end haha.

    • Haha ‘look at the savings’ is my life! Oh Kat I think you and I are VERY similar ;P

  • I love the pic, it has a nice feeling. My problem is when I try to buy something different thant my usuals (stripes, pinks, etc.) I always end up not wearing them as much. But if I’m in a shop and see a Xth striped tee I like, I just tell myself: this is not happening, I’m not buying another one of these! And then end up bying it… But at least I get great usage out of it ;)

    • Thanks Steph. I’m the same. White tshirts, jeans and kimonos are always jumping out at me but like you said at least we get lots of wearing out of them ;P

Are you sure YOLO isn’t a justification.

Because I use that one alot.

  • Agreed!! And one of the things I do which is horrible, is NOT try stuff on. And then I get home and it looks just a bit off, and I justify it by saying I can make it work. And it just gets shoved to the back of my closet.

I laughed at some of these comments, like hiding items in the shop so you can come back later. My sister told me she did this one day & I laughed my head off - I thought I was the only one who did this! So it’s not just in my family then?
My tip is go away & think about it. Either go for a cuppa, or come back another day. It helps you gain some perspective.

    • No way. I think everyone does it :P
Yes! That’s exactly what we all need to do more :)

  • One thing that works for me is to go to a mall look at everything and go home without anything, if something caught my eye I’ll definitely remember to buy it next time! It happened a few times and probably saved me a lot of money the other times I was unsure! 4 amazing tips to follow fer sure :) xx

    • I’m one of those people who always thinks it won’t be there next time haha! Such a sucker. x

      • That can happen too! I sometimes get the things for that reason when I go somewhere unusual and when I get home most of the times I regret at least 1 item haha :) x

I definitely need to adopt some of this advice, I have so many random purchases that nothing nothing in my wardrobe co-ordinates. Im am truly one those women with “so many clothes and nothing to wear”!

    • Haha I think every woman is though! :P
