Have you ever bought something and just totally regretted it a few weeks later? If you’re saying no, stop! You’re lying because we all have. Here a few tips for avoiding that next time you hit the shops.
WRITE A LIST
You all saw this coming because I think that making a list can solve most of our problems. Before you head out to the shops write a list of the things you’re looking for so that way you don’t get sidetracked by the new section in store. I have a pretty hefty list saved in my notes so if I do spontaneously decide to have a mosey at the stores I can have a flick through and keep an eye out for those bits.
CONSUMER TRAPS
These are the things that are put into stores to make to spend money. It comes in many, many different forms but if you’re wary of them you won’t get sucked in. Every single retail store is laid out in a certain way. Ever noticed the ‘NEW’ sign with the latest hot trends as soon as you walk in? Or in a electrical store that they have all the Apple bits right up front available to play with? Or even that sale racks are always right down the back and squeezed in so it’s impossible to sort through? Oh and my favourite - they advertise 50% OFF STOREWIDE but in tiny writing to says ‘excludes everything but one tiny rack that has make up all over it’… Something like that… I digress. It’s all there to make you spend money so be aware of that and take your time walking around stores rather then grabbing the first thing you see.
QUESTION YOURSELF
I’m guilty of being the worse person at doing this. I recently bought another kimono that I really didn’t need (no Sarah, YOLO is not a valid justification for that purchase neither is the maybe I’ll say I’m collecting them now.. Just no). If you’re holding onto the most beautiful piece you think you’ve ever seen ask yourself these questions: Do you need it? Can you find something similar for a better price? Is it worth the price on the tag? Do you need other things more?
IF YOU’RE NOT SURE…
If it’s tight and it’s the last one - don’t buy it because you’re probably not going to lose the weight to justify the purchase (says the girl with too many size things) and if it just doesn’t look ‘right’ then put it back. Bring a friend back another day for a second opinion! Or something I do is check out the stores return policy, take the item home and try it on in my own space. You’ll have your other clothing for styling and you won’t be under those horrid fluorescent lights every store has.
What are your top tips for buying better?
