BOOK REVIEW: THE SPOTLIGHT

book-review-the-spotlight

Now it’s the end of the month it’s time to share my thoughts on this month’s read ‘The Spotlight’ by Roxy Jacenko. A novel about a PR Jazzy Lou and her life in the PR game.

There is no doubt this is an entertaining novel and the lavish lifestyle draws you in. The designer handbags, extended hotel stays and remodelling the house is exactly the talk most of us dream of having. I haven’t read either of the first books but that didn’t effect picking up and reading this. Roxy’s writing is really honest and does not hold back when describing the Sydney’s social scene.

The book is set around Queen Bee PR and Jazzy’s life. It speaks of how it’s changing directions due to blogger’s becoming ‘the thing’ of the moment. Jazzy Lou also has to deal with relationship issues, problematic employees, the house being remodelled and judgements about her daughters Instagram account taking off. Jazzy has the inner conflict about taking money for promotion on Fifi’s Instagram and how everyone voiced their opinion rather rudely when she decided to keep on with the account. I found parts of the book a little longwinded as Jazzy Lou defended herself and the decisions she made in her business and personal life however I was intrigued by her thought process all at once.

What I find increasingly hard throughout the book was separating Jacenko’s life and the novel. I do follow Jacenko as I find her a very inspiring women in the industry so I found myself wondering how much of it is actually imagination over being based on her own life.

If you’re interested in the industry or are just after an easy read I think that is a fantastic book. I did thoroughly enjoy it, so much so I’ll be purchasing the first two and reading those. It’s all the things you expect and more from Roxy Jacenko.

Have you read this book? What were your thoughts?

PS: the book for March is Lena Dunham’s Not That Kind Of Girl – if you’re interested in reading along then sharing your own thoughts I would love it!
