IT’S BROW TIME: THE LOWDOWN ON FIVE DIFFERENT BROW PRODUCTS

I’ve heard how hard it is to find the perfect brow product for Blondes and Red-Heads, but have you ever heard about how hard it is for Brunettes??!

As someone with dark dark brown brows (leaning more towards black), I have found it incredibly difficult to find the perfect brow shade. There is nothing worse than being able to see a different color underneath your brow hairs. It just feels… a little wrong. I’ve been trying some different powders, creams, pencils, and brow setting products, and here are my findings:

First of all, the pencil.

Eye of Horus have recently released their new brow pencil range. There’s a blonde, a medium brown, and a dark brown to black shade. I purchased ‘Nile’, the darkest shade after swatching it on the back of my hand. This is actually recommended to those with dark-brown to black hair, so I was looking for something more ashy-toned, not a lot of warmth, and that leaned more towards black.I did not get it.

Look, it’s pretty close, but no bingo. I still do use this to fill in my ‘bald’ spots, the petite nib is perfect for drawing tiny hairs. Unfortunately the warmth in this product ruins it for me, and I can only use this in miniscule amounts. It is buildable however, which is a small tick in the box.

Next, the cream.

Paulas Choice Brow Cream Duo is a beautiful product. It sticks around all day, is blendable, and well-pigmented without being daunting for the heavy-handed. My issue with this is the blonde shade, which I probably will never use.

On the right is a lovely dark brown shade, but again, is a little warm for me. My other issue is that it is not buildable, so if you’re looking at drawing some hairs with a tiny brush with this one, (which I love to do, thank you years of over-plucking) it’s probably not the product for you. Also, the brush inside this palette is to die for.

Then we have the powders.

The Ardell Brow Defining Palette is great for mixing shades to find your prefect match. I mix the black with the dark brown on the back of my hand and then apply to fill my brows in. It has the perfect brow bone highlight as well. I will say that the powder has a bit of fallout, so you definitely need to blot the excess before application.

The next powder is by Ardell as well. This is my go-to product if I have a little time up my sleeve. I have the shade ‘Mink Brown’, which is a cool dark brown. Being the same brand, you would think the powder texture would be the same, but this seems to be creamier with less fallout. I do love this one and it’s the closest I have found to a colour match!! I pair this with the Eye of Horus pencil for when I’m feeling fancy.

Last up the extra bits..

Having thick, bushy eyebrows can mean that they can be a little unruly. They seem to have a mind of their own, that can only be tamed by a setting product. I have two stars. The Anastasia Clear Brow Gel is the perfect product for setting those suckers in place. It last all day, but can tend to give you that ‘wet look’ if you over-apply. I actually prefer using this since it’s dried out slightly. The price point actually KILLS ME though, so I’m looking for an alternate clear gel. Suggestions please!!

The second is the Ardell Brow Grooming Pencil. It’s a wax pencil that you can draw over your brows once they’re done and comb over with a spoolie to set the hairs in place. This is a super natural look, and is totally undetectable, so if you’re in a rush, this product is a one-stop shop.

I love this post, Sarah. I have dark dark brown hair and my skin tone is cool, so I always have trouble finding the perfect colour for my brows. So many are to light or to warm, I’ll have to check out the two Ardell products as they sound wonderful.

I hear ya sista! So hard to find the right shade for black haired brows. I made the terrible mistake the first time trying ‘brows’ by filling in with black eyeshadow!! Oh the horror!

I have bushy brows and I am ash blonde with cool undertones so I can only use ash toned products, if it even has a hint of warmth to the shade I am looking reddy orange. MAC Omega is I am currently using but I have previously enjoyed Loreal Brow Artist in Blonde Taupe, ELF Brow Kit in Ash, and ABH Brow Wiz in Taupe.

I have the same problem as you Rebecca. I have had a lot of luck with Mac Omega in the past as well as the ELF Brow Kit. I haven’t tried the ABH Brow Wiz but it always looks so good on other people :) x

At least it’s fairly cheap? Lol. I hear you though! I feel like I have to stick to 1 or 2 products and most don’t fit perfectly. x

Well right now I have about 3 different shadows I can use because they are all black but it’s deffinitely not expensive. Once I run out I plan on just picking up the cheapest black shadow I can find. :)

great post! i’ve not tried any of these products but i definitely have found it really hard in the past to get the right product shade for my brows. mine are also really dark brown and i’ve always shied away from buying anything straight up black because brown is a lot warmer and i’ve seen girls who use black products and it just looks nuts! but so many brown products lean really red/warm and aren’t quite dark enough.

i adore anastasia’s products though. they aren’t super cheap but the dipbrow pomade is my favourite (in dark brown) and it will last you an absolute lifetime. if you get the brow wiz (which i also have) you’ll run through it in a couple of months but there is so much product in a pot of dipbrow, or in their pressed brow powder duos which i have and love as well. i know it’s a cliche and so many people recommend anastasia products but i’ve really found the colours to work well for me and apart from the brow wiz they’ll last forever so they’re worth the money to me. :)
