Recently there has been alot of talk about Lucas Papaw Ointment and it’s ingredients…. In a not very positive manner. I was asked to put together a post with some alternatives to the cult product so I’ve rounded up my favourite lip balms for you.
Let’s get things a little cleared up. The Lucas Papaw Ointment contains petroleum jelly, which is the main ingredient in Vaseline, but it retails as at a more expensive price. It also contains only about 4% of papaw… That has alot of people pretty pissed off. For me, I don’t think it’s that big of a deal because alot of companies do similar things and pass off products containing certain ingredients at a higher price. I’ve never been a huge fan of papaw ointments in the first place so I’m not heartbroken/annoyed/losing it over the whole situation. Whether you still love the product or aren’t such a fan there are so many different products that do any amazing job at moisturising your lips. I haven’t mentioned any papaw ointments because as I said they’re not my favourite type of product to use however if you’re after a natural alternative to the Lucas brand I really recommend the Suvana Organic Paw Paw & Honey Balm.
1. Ego Sunsense Lipbalm SPF 50+
In summer this is all I use because I’m so prone to getting burnt, chapped lips. It’s UVA/UVB broad spectrum protection so you’re fully protected and it has a little curved applicator so you can apply directly to your lips. It does give the lips a little bit of a sheen but no horrible white cast and it’s nothing super glossy so perfect for anyone (guys especially) who don’t want something glossy on the lips. It’s not the most repairing lip balm but if you’re active and/or always out in the sun this is an absolute must-have product!
2. Burt’s Bees Beewax Lip Balm
I can’t tell you how many of these I’ve gone through over the years… At least 5? For everyone wanting to steer clear of petroleum this is 100% natural containing awesome ingredients like bees wax, coconut oil, sunflower oil and peppermint oil which makes it really refreshing to apply on the lips. I prefer the original verison however the do have different flavours too! It’s in the classic stick form which some people hate but so they’ve also do the same product in a little pot as well. I have both and prefer the stick because it’s such a solid product getting it out of the tin can be difficult.
3. Clarins Instant Light Comfort Oil
Oh. My. God. This is probably the most luxurious lip product I’ve ever owned and I can wholeheartedly say I would repurchase it. It contains hazelnut, jojoba and mirabelle oil which together nourish, add a shiny finish that is super long-lasting. The applicator really hugs the lips making it super easy to apply and it doesn’t feel overly oily on the lips. It’s best for if you’re after a long-lasting, hydrating lip balm with a luxe high shine finish.
4. Go-To Skincare Lips! Super Balm
It’s no secret I’m a huge fan of the Go-To line in fact I frequently check the website and social media to see if anything new is coming out… Is that normal? I digress. This bad boy is the one I rely on during the day if I need something repairing that’s almost very light on the lips. The texture of this balm is a bit strange and almost chunky however once worked into the lips it becomes smooth and virtually undetectable. It’s full of nourishing ingredients like shea butter, lanolin, apricot oil and almond along with a handful of other kick-ass ingredients. The combination makes it really great for treating the lips without feeling like you have a really intense layer.
5. Lanolips 101 Ointment
I’ve left my absolute favourite until last – ah Lanolips you are my one and only. If ever I have had a reaction, windburn, sunburn, chapped lips or anything like that that REALLY needs something INTENSE (so intense it requires caps lock) I turn to the trusty 101 Ointment. Although pictured above is the flavours I’m actually a huge fan of the no frills original one, perhaps because it’s what I first used two years ago, but these ones are equally as great. It is 100% lanolin balm, the flavours do contain peach/apple extract, and it’s the most hydrating thing I’ve ever put on my lips. It can feel quite thick so I do opt for this as an overnight treatment however as I said if my lips ever need some TLC this is what I turn too. If you haven’t found ‘the’ lip balm to heal those lips do yourself a favour and try this!
