Over the past year I’ve started really investing in my shoes because I hate not being comfortable. It sounds strange but that’s the only reason why I’ve started seeking good quality shoes over a $20 pair on flats. When I say ‘higher end’ I’m not talking designer shoes because let’s be honest that’s just not where I’m at in my life but shoes ranging for $200-$800. It’s still alot of money! There are some lessons I’ve learned along the way that’ll hopefully help when it comes to buying a nice pair of shoes for yourself.
Go for something that’s timeless for YOU
Everyone will tell you that a strappy pair of black heels is timeless and you’ll get so much wear out off them but if it’s not your style then why spend more on it? I spent almost $300 on my Senso Riley’s (pictured above) and so many people told me I was crazy but they suit my style. For me, I’ll get so much more wear out of a quirky shoe like these then a strappy black heel. If you’re going to spend extra on a pair of shoes ask yourself if it’s something that will slot into your existing wardrobe easily? Are they a pair of shoes that you can see yourself wearing for the next few years?
Try on more than once
With my Senso shoes I actually tried them on 3 times before I purchased them. Call me crazy but I wanted to make sure that they were as comfy as I initially thought and that they were something I would wear often. The shop assistants will probably roll their eyes at you but who cares? You’ve gotta do what’s right for you. Ordering online? Try to find a local stockist with your size in stock if you can. There is nothing more annoying then returning shoes. If unavoidable try to find an online retailer that offers free returns and maybe purchase two sizes. That way you can try both and send back with out paying extra.
Try on in different sizes
I didn’t do this for a particular pair of shoes I own and I’m bummed because I think a size up would’ve been better. It’s quite common for shoe sizes to vary across brands so make sure you try on a size above and below what you think you’d be. Depending on the style of shoe you might find a different size suits better and you’ll have that piece of mind that you ended up with the perfect fit.
Do your research on a particular pair of shoes
More often than not the shoes on the more expensive side of things will have reviews online - even if it’s just on Instagram. I was desperate for a particular pair of Alexandra Wang boots this season however when Googling there were tonnes of reviews saying they were a wider boot so they probably wouldn’t’ve suited my foot. I ended up finding a similar style from a different brand that fitted my foot much better but it’s important to read up on the shoe, how it wears/fits/comfort of it because you don’t want to purchase something then be unhappy with it.
What are the things you consider before purchasing a new pair of shoes?
