How often do you buy a piece for a special occasion and then it sits in the back of your wardrobe until another event comes up? Yep, we ALL do it! Recently I’ve been trying to really work my wardrobe and that includes those pieces that I would call ‘occasion wear’ because the truth is that’s where I spend alot of my money.

I have a few of these midi skirts that have a spilt up the side and are relatively form fitting. This particular one is from the online boutique Pure Moda and they gifted it too me before I went away to Bali in July. It’s currently on sale so check it out here! I was saving it too style for a special event – like a wedding – but the more I thought about it the more I thought it was a versatile piece that really could work for a casual outfit too.

Consider your silhouettes and textures
For this form fitting skirt I decided to make it super casual by teaming it with this Interval Poncho I bought earlier this year and my Lulu & Rose Maxwell Shirt. The jumper is so oversized but I like the way it instantly makes the whole look more casual with the addition of that one chunky silhouette. Soon it won’t be cold enough to wear such a big chunky knit so I would opt for a a black oversized cotton tee instead. In terms of textures the material of something can really dress things up like this silk MLM The Label Top that I’m wearing for the night version is a material that I’d prefer to wear at night because it’s that little more formal.

Your shoes make all the difference
In the photos you can see how the cage Siren Heels make the outfit look stellar whereas my Senso Leon Boots with the tiny heel make everything more casual. Shoes will bring an outfit up or down depending on how you want to style a piece and I recommend changing them for a really big dramatic difference.

And accessories matter
Like the shoes accessories will also make a dramatic difference to an outfit. For the dressy version I am just wearing a clutch because realistically that’s all I would take out on a night out. When I’m styling the skirt for during the day I’ve got my trusty H&M Tassel Bag along with my Lack of Color Fedora (that I actually nabbed from Isaac’s wardrobe!) and those elements make everything really day appropriate.

Now I challenge you to grab something out of your wardrobe that you haven’t worn in forever and try it on with a few different things! I was surprised how much I’ve been enjoying 2-3 of these skirts for day-to-day now I pulled them out. Have fun with it and trust me, it’s so rewarding pulling out a $150 skirt and wearing it weekly… That cost per wear finally going down!

Love these two looks!! And that skirt is gorgeous too! I never really consider wearing formal or occasion wear as an every day piece but you are absolutely right, that’s where we spend A LOT of our money so why not wear it more often! Love your tips, I’m thinking I might just give it a go! xx

I love how adventurous you are with fashion. I am so boring with clothes. But I love this way of thinking and I’m completely inspired to try dressing down some of my dresses this summer…you know, when it eventually stops raining!

haha it’s so funny you say that because I think I’m super basic!! Can’t believe it’s half way through October and it’s still freezing… THE WORST.

I totally agree with making occasion-wear more versatile. I recently bought a flow-y floral jumpsuit and I can dress it up with heels or dress it down with boots, which I love! When you spend so much on pieces, you want to wear it a lot!
