WHY I DON’T FIT INTO THE FASHION BLOGGING SCENE

Recently I’ve turned this space into a beauty and fashion hybrid because I found my jam when it comes to fashion. Although I’m totally smitten for sharing my style with y’all I can’t help but feel like I don’t REALLY belong and here is why…

I’m not a mummy blogger but I’m not super high end
There is such a boom of ace mummy bloggers who mix fashion, life and beauty all into the one account. Although I follow and LOVE a bunch of them I haven’t yet pushed a baby out of my va-jay and somehow I don’t think that a frenchie mum is quite the same. After all you CAN leave a french bulldog at home unattended and it’d all be okay. So I don’t fit into the ‘mummy blogger’ category but I also don’t fit into the ‘super high end/polished/monochrome/editorial’ category either. There is a blur between magazines and blogs now but I still want this space to remain real and relatable. I don’t wear super crazy high heels everyday and I never want my account to reflect a fantasy land.

I tell people where things are from
There is nothing more annoying than when a blogger has uploaded a cute snap wearing an item you’ve been looking for high and low without tagging or telling you where it is from. God damn. As a consumer or follower – whatever you want to call it – I HATE it. It gets even worse when you comment and they don’t get back to you. WHY!

If it’s not my personal style I say no
I reach out to brands and brands reach out to me but sometimes nothing comes of it if a particular item they’re wanting me to promote just isn’t ME. I’ve had plenty of brands never contact me again because I’ve politely declined an item for the sole reason I wouldn’t be comfy in it. Of course this can be a bit tricky because sometimes there are super blurred lines between trying some new and it fitting into your vibe. I think it’s about how you style items and making it your own in those situations.

I wear the same things twice
How many times have you guys seen my Nobody Denim jeans? Or my Lack Of Colour hats? God I’ve lost count of the amount of items I’ve tagged those brands. It’s funny because sometimes I scroll through feeds and I’m in awe of the constant flow of new stuff and lack of repetition. I get repeating certain outfits could be boring and I even asked on my Insta-story a few weeks ago if you found it annoying but I think it’s just a testament to how incredible those items are. In real life everyone outfit repeats right?!

Have you ever felt like you don’t belong in a particular group? How did you get over it?

PS – this isn’t a dig at anyone in the industry at all. It’s just me feeling like I’m on the outer :)

  • I feel this on a lot of levels!!! Particularly about fitting in to the mummy blogger scene! It seems a very closed scene they don’t let anyone in to haha.

I love you sharing your fashion and I actually love it for all of the reasons you don’t “fit in”.

I think your blog is perfect!

    • Thank you so much Tahana! I think I always worry because I feel different to other people but I’m so happy doing what I’m doing and that’s all that matters.

  • I love your blog for all the reasons you don’t “fit in” too! As I think I’ve said to you before, I couldn’t give a damn how many times you rock an item – if you love it, then why not wear it over & over? That’s what clothes/shoes/accessories are for right?! IMO, all this shit about only wearing an item once or not buying something just because someone else has already worn it on social media is insane. Everyone has their own unique sense of style & wears items differently, so whoever made up those “rules” can get stuffed. (Sorry, this topic kinda gets me fired up!)

    • No I LOVE you feel this way because it’s something that really got me fired up over the past few months. I do feel fab because I’m bringing something different to the table but at the same time it’s that school yard ‘I am on the outer circle’ feeling. I couldn’t imagine not wearing things I love like hats xD I always wonder if some Instagram feeds actually ARE a reflection of that persons style or whether it’s just staged for the gram….

  • I’m with you! I’m loving fashion but I wouldn’t call myself a fashion blogger. I’m with you, in the unknown space of fashion/beauty/lifestyle blogging space…

    • It’s weird isn’t it?! It feels like you’re completely on your own haha… I love your content now Rach! It feels more real then just beauty (I feel the same way about my own content too)

  • I think we all feel like we don’t belong somewhere at some point. I love your approach to fashion and how you balance trying out new things but also realistically sticking to your favorites! It’s sooo not real life to wear something different all the time!

  • Kate Flint

I am by NO MEANS a fashion blogger but I love your style of fashion blogging. I feel it’s a lot more honest and achievable (for lack of a better word) than the unattainable new outfit everyday that costs a bomb style. You do you girl! x

  • I don’t really fit into any particular category of blogger, so Millennial Lifestyle rounds it out for me, lol. I don’t think it matters. I believe our voices help us stand out, and those who like us do – those who don’t… don’t. I’ll just say that I prefer your fashion blogging style over many others.

I feel like blogging should be different from magazine editorials or high fashion shoots – I’d look through a magazine or look up Mario Testino for that kind of stuff. I don’t like magazines or any of that editorial stuff, so it obviously rolls into my preferences that I wouldn’t prefer that blogging style. It’s a preference. We all have our own, and I think that’s beautiful. Keep doing you, Sarah. You’re amazing.

  • The Sunday Mode

I often feel this way as well just in general with blogging but if I do a fashion post especially all of this comes up with me. It’s like I’m somewhere in the middle? Wait, do we have an un tapped market here? haha

I always repeat items as well and in ‘real life’ if I like an outfit I wear it all the time in the same way but that doesn’t usually make for super interesting content…

Oh! And when people don’t link to what they’re wearing…that’s a massive turn off for me.

  • i can totally relate to you… I sometimes feel like why do I bother attempting to do what I’ve been trying to do for the last two years… It’s super annoying when you see an item on instagram and the instagrammer gets all vague and wont tell you where it is. We always find the item eventually. It’s not like you’re the ONLY one who owns that item. Some people need to get off their high horse and support one another. I also feel like there is this huge hierarchy out there in the blogging world as well. like instagramers only want to hang out with other instagramers if they have the 5+ figure following but won’t give those with less followers the time of day… Don’t get me wrong, I have met so many people with this man followers who I consider friends now but this is something that I have noticed for a while.

I sometimes fall to victim of being an outfit repeater but to be honest, I always try not to as it is a HUGE fear of mine since high school haha. But I do, do it sometimes.

I try and be as candid and honest as possible through my posts and instafeed as well and have found that others like this and can relate so I think we should just keep doing what we are doing and be true to our selves and eventually brands will see that and will be more interested to work with us .

All the best girl. If it’s any consolation, I think you are doing a great job as a beauty and fashion blogger <3
